Alba Azamar: A Trailblazer Bridging Cincinnati’s Communities
The Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati Foundation (HCCUSA Foundation) proudly features Alba Isabel Azamar Diaz in our “Kudos Corner” for making a meaningful impact in the community as a 2023 HCCUSA Foundation scholarship recipient and for her work as a Multilingual Learners Coordinator at Cincinnati Public Schools.
The HCCUSA Foundation honors Ms. Azamar for her exceptional professional and volunteer work, her commitment to personal engagement, fairness, accessibility, and opportunities for emerging communities.
We commend Ms. Azamar for her remarkable work helping bridge the home–school gap for multilingual families. She understands the challenges many of her students and families face and is committed to providing the support and guidance they need to overcome them, working closely with teachers, staff, administrators, and community partners. She advocates for the children at school, preserving and promoting the cultural heritages and identities of families the CPS serves, ensuring they feel seen, respected, and valued within the school and community.
Ms. Azamar, originally from Angel R. Cabada, Veracruz, Mexico, attended Escuela Telesecundarias, a distance education program for rural communities. This program expanded her knowledge and cultural understanding through television and books. She later attended Escuela Secundaria y de Bachilleres de Alvarado, a high school in Alvarado, Veracruz, where the music, dances, and culture profoundly shaped her.
Ms. Azamar immigrated to the US as a teenager with the dream of building a better future. Despite being undocumented and facing uncertainty, she always aspired to continue her education, a value instilled in her by her parents. She understood that learning would open doors and help her achieve her goals, but navigating the US educational system was challenging. However, she recognized the transformative power of education, which provided her with stability, confidence, and purpose, profoundly impacting her life.
Ms. Azamar earned an Associate’s degree in Marketing Management Digital at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College during challenging times, inspired by her daughter. She actively participated in campus leadership and academic excellence, serving in the Student Government Association to address students’ concerns and enhance the campus experience. She also contributed to the Black Male Initiative, promoting equity and empowerment for the Black community. As an active member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, she strengthened her leadership skills, equity, and commitment to advocacy and community empowerment.
Ms. Azamar’s personal journey has taken her to establish a dance group called Salsamberas to share her culture with Latin rhythms and traditions. Through their performances, they bring joy, connection, and cultural pride to our community, showcasing the beauty and richness of our heritage. Her work in schools, activism, community leadership, and on stage is grounded in service, empowerment, and cultural celebration. She aspires to contribute to our indigenous and Afro-Latino communities by building a stronger, more connected future for the next generations.
Ms. Azamar, the Coordinator of the Young Professionals Group at LULAC Cincinnati, promotes scholarships, impactful events for young Latino students and professionals, and vital community resources. She continues her passion for volunteering, networking, and empowering the next generation of Latino leaders to pursue their goals with confidence.
