Alfonso Barnes: Making a Meaningful Impact on Multilingual Learners at CPS

The Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati, USA, proudly features Alfonso Barnes in our “Kudos Corner” for his dedication, compassion, and meaningful contributions as an educator with Cincinnati Public Schools.

The Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati, USA, honors Mr. Barnes, an ESL teacher who serves as an itinerant educator supporting multilingual learners at Mt. Airy School, the Virtual School, and Western Hills High School. He began his career with Cincinnati Public Schools in October 2020 at LEAP Academy and now works with students across grades K–12. In his role, Mr. Barnes collaborates closely with classroom teachers to adapt instruction for English learners by implementing effective strategies such as scaffolding, vocabulary development, and differentiated explanations that help students access academic content while strengthening their English proficiency.

Mr. Barnes is deeply committed to helping multilingual learners succeed both academically and personally. He encourages students to recognize the importance of learning English for their own growth and for the opportunities it creates for their families. At the same time, he emphasizes the importance of honoring and preserving their cultural identities. He believes that bilingualism opens doors to greater educational, professional, and global opportunities.

Beyond the classroom, Mr. Barnes works closely with families to help them navigate the school system and access community resources. He frequently serves as an interpreter during parent-teacher conferences and assists teachers by translating documents for Spanish-speaking families. His dedication often extends beyond school walls as he supports families in overcoming challenges and connecting with services that improve their quality of life.

A passionate community volunteer, Mr. Barnes has spent many years serving local organizations. He taught Spanish classes to community members for four years at Una Taza in Bellevue, Kentucky, and has volunteered for seven years at St. Bernard Church in Spring Grove Village, where he teaches both English and Spanish to members of the community. He has also served as a Cincinnati USA Ambassador at the Cincinnati Visitor Center and volunteered during the 2012 World Choir Games. In recognition of his service, he was honored as Volunteer of the Year by Su Casa Hispanic Ministries.

We commend Mr. Barnes as a truly impactful educator. He consistently demonstrates empathy, cultural awareness, and a profound passion for language acquisition in his teaching endeavors. His commitment to empowering multilingual learners and supporting their families continues to make a meaningful impact across the Cincinnati Public Schools community.

Born in Salamanca, Spain, and raised in Panama City, Panama, Mr. Barnes immigrated to the United States in May 1980. His personal journey of learning English as a new immigrant inspires his work with students today. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Cincinnati and holds an Educator License with a TESOL endorsement. Before becoming a teacher, he worked as an administrator at an international language school where he also led the translation and interpretation department, strengthening his expertise in language acquisition and cross-cultural communication.
