The HCCUSA Foundation supported a community-led therapeutic writing workshop
Luz Elena Schemmel, Executive Director, and Lorena Mora-Mowry, board member of the Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati Foundation, participated in "Pause & Write Your Next Page / Pausa & Escribe Tu Siguiente Página," presented on September 26, 2026, at Women Writing for a Change in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Lorena Brown introduced therapeutic writing, a guided practice that uses intentional and reflective writing to process emotions, reduce stress, and promote mental healing.
Lorena also discussed the potential benefits of therapeutic writing, including helping individuals organize memories, find meaning in difficult experiences, lower stress levels, support immune function, and reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress.
Participants wrote a quick gratitude journal (a simple, therapeutic writing practice that takes five minutes a day to lower stress and boost mood) and therapeutic letter writing to an emotion (a powerful technique used to externalize heavy feelings, gain clarity, and find emotional release without needing to send anything).
Rosa Reyes presented an introduction to emotional regulation and the Window of Tolerance, an optimal emotional and physiological state in which individuals can function effectively, think clearly, and manage daily life challenges. She also introduced the PAUSE framework and explained how it can be used as a healing tool.
